Pablo Neruda has made an incredible influence on the history of Chile. His real name was Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto. He was born in Parral, Chile on July 12, 1904. At age 13, he began contributing small articles to “La Manana”, a daily paper, with his first publication and poem being called Entusiasmo y Perseverancia. His ‘literary breakthrough’ occurred in 1933 with the release of a collection of surrealistic poems called Residencia en la tierra. (Pablo Neruda) Pablo Neruda has also had a great influence on Chile’s politics. Chile’s government put him in charge of honorary consulships from the years 1927 to 1935. This responsibility took Neruda to places like Burma, Java, Ceylon, Buenos Aires, Singapore, Madrid, and Barcelona. (Pablo Neruda)
After living in Spain and France for a while, Pablo Neruda returned to Chile in 1943. In 1945, he was elected senator of Chile, which made him join the Communist Party of Chile. However, he protested against President Videla’s views on striking miners in 1947 and had to live underground for two years. He then moved abroad to Europe where he was safe. Pablo Neruda returned home to Chile in 1952. (Pablo Neruda)
